Ans: Bluestar was on the last of her nine lives, and he could not let her risk losing oneIn the text, Fireheart thinks that Bluestar had reached "the last of her nine lives," and he could never let her lose a life in battle, so he urged her to retreat.

Instead he "reached a silver birch that stretched up beside a pale green garden fence" and climbed over the fence, which made Fireheart remember Dustpelt's mocking words.

Ans: Fireheart and Sandstorm discovered that the ShadowClan cats crossed through a round stone tunnel under the Thunderpath (a secret ShadowClan route), and learned that ShadowClan was suffering from a plague; then Fireheart secretly followed Cloudpaw and found that instead of hunting or visiting his mother Princess, he climbed a silver birch in Twolegplace and slipped into a garden behind a pale green fence.

Ans: It bent down and stroked Cloudpaw, and Cloudpaw pressed his head against its handThe text says the Twoleg "bent down and stroked Cloudpaw, who stretched up to press his head against its hand," and from the tone it seemed they had greeted each other this way before, so Cloudpaw must have come often.

Ans: Near SunningrocksCinderpelt says, "I smelled their sickness when I was out collecting herbs yesterday... Near Sunningrocks." She smelled their sickness while gathering herbs, and they were looking for a safe hiding place.

Ans: Because their own camp held nothing but sickness, and they needed help and a safe placeCinderpelt says, "They needed my help. There was nothing for them in their camp but sickness." So the ShadowClan camp had only disease, and they needed healing.

Ans: The house looked dark and empty, and there were new scents besides Cloudpaw'sThe text says the house "looked curiously dark and empty," and Fireheart felt "There were new scents here, as well as Cloudpaw's." The mood was strange, and then the door slammed shut.

Ans: At the den under the old oak root, Fireheart found the medicine cat Cinderpelt secretly treating the sick ShadowClan cats (including Littlecloud) who had come from Sunningrocks, and she said their camp held nothing but sickness and they needed help; afterwards Fireheart took Sandstorm to track Cloudpaw's scent to that Twoleg house, where they found it dark and empty with strange new scents, giving an eerie feeling.

Ans: The Twoleg put him into the "monster" (a car) and drove awayThe text says the Twoleg "clambered into the monster with Cloudpaw and slammed the door shut." The monster blew out exhaust and drove onto the Thunderpath, and Fireheart thought, "The Twolegs had stolen Cloudpaw!"

Ans: If they could not drink, their milk would dry up and their kits would starveSpeckletail says, "if she doesn't drink, her milk'll dry up and her kits will starve." So without water, a queen's milk runs dry and the kits go hungry.

Ans: The two ShadowClan cats told him themselves when they first arrivedGraystripe says, "I came over and spoke to them soon after they arrived. They told me that Cinderpelt had hidden them here." So the ShadowClan cats told him themselves.

Ans: GraystripeStonefur explained for Graystripe that Graystripe "heard Fireheart's yowl from Fourtrees... persuaded us to come and help." The RiverClan warriors with him included Bluestar's son Stonefur.

Ans: On the Thunderpath, Fireheart fought a bloody battle against his old enemy Tigerclaw and a group of banished traitor cats (Brokentail's old followers); at the critical moment, Graystripe led a RiverClan patrol (including Bluestar's son Stonefur) to the rescue, driving off the traitors and making Tigerclaw flee into the thorns, but ThunderClan paid the price of Runningwind's death, and Fireheart told Whitestorm and Mousefur to carry his body back to camp.

Ans: He dragged it off the Thunderpath onto the verge, so his Clanmates could give him an honorable burialFireheart "grasped the warrior's scruff in his teeth" and dragged Whitethroat onto the far verge, hoping his Clanmates would soon find him and "give him an honorable burial."

These are dark times for ThunderClan, but no cat could do more than you have." She also advised him indirectly to speed up the apprentices' training and send out more patrols.

Ans: Climbed up a sycamore tree and crouched on the low branches to spyAfter smelling the strange scent, Fireheart hissed, "Up here!" and the three cats "clawed his way up a sycamore tree," crouching on the lowest branch to look down at a dark shape among the trees (with two black ears).

Ans: Yellowfang treated Fireheart's wounds and encouraged him that no cat could do more than he had in these dark days, so Fireheart sped up the apprentices' training and added patrols; then he, Sandstorm, and Brightpaw caught a rabbit, Sandstorm praised him as a good deputy, and on the way to Fourtrees the three cats smelled a strange cat scent and climbed a sycamore tree to spy.

Ans: RavenpawFireheart called out "Ravenpaw!" in greeting. Ravenpaw even mistook Sandstorm for "Sandpaw" and was corrected by her to Sandstorm.

Ans: He had witnessed Tigerclaw killing the deputy Redtail, and Tigerclaw wanted to silence himThe text explains that Ravenpaw "accidentally witnessed Tigerclaw killing Redtail, the ThunderClan deputy," and Tigerclaw wanted to kill him to keep the secret, so Fireheart and Graystripe helped him escape to the farm to live with Barley.

Ans: Two huge dogsThe text says "Two massive dogs loomed behind them." Fireheart and Sandstorm climbed an ash tree, and before climbing Fireheart "felt the flesh rip on the dog's swaying jowls" as he clawed the dog.

Ans: A dogFireheart thought, "It was a dog!" The white bundle in the nest was a dog, not Cloudpaw; only then did Cloudpaw walk into the room, ignoring the barking dog.

Ans: He calmly ignored itThe text says Fireheart expected Cloudpaw to "arch his back and spit, but instead the white cat coolly ignored it," showing Cloudpaw was already used to the kittypet life.

Ans: Near the Twoleg farm, two huge dogs chased Fireheart, Sandstorm, and Ravenpaw; the two cats climbed an ash tree and Fireheart clawed the dog's face to get away, then at the window they saw Cloudpaw in the nest ignoring the barking dog, looking thin and unhappy, and when Fireheart scratched the window, Cloudpaw recognized him and the Twoleg was alerted too.

Ans: Of course! He knew he should never have gone near the Twolegs, and he had learned his lessonCloudpaw lifted his chin and said, "Of course! I know I should never have gone near Twolegs... I've learned my lesson."

Ans: He was stolen by the Twolegs (he fought back but was taken away by force)Cloudpaw announces to the Clan, "I was stolen by the Twolegs!... I hissed and spat and fought, but the Twolegs took me anyway!" He put the blame on the Twolegs.

Ans: There was a dog loose in the nest with himCloudpaw said "It was loose in the nest with me!" Patchpelt cried out "Dog?" and One-Eye also asked in surprise, "Did he say dog?"

Ans: Cloudpaw drew the Twoleg away to help the group escape, and back in camp he claimed he had been "stolen" by the Twolegs, that he fought back but was taken by force, and stressed that Fireheart and Sandstorm had rescued him from the nest with the dog; although Fireheart worried whether the Clan believed him, he used the chance to make Cloudpaw follow the warrior code from then on, and Sandstorm also praised Cloudpaw for fighting like a real warrior when they met the WindClan patrol.

Ans: She thought StarClan had led him homeAfter hearing from Fireheart that Cloudpaw wanted to rejoin, Bluestar murmured, "So StarClan led him home," seeing his return as StarClan's doing.

Ans: DarkstripeFireheart suggested, "Perhaps Darkstripe should tell the others—After all, he was the one to object." Bluestar praised him with "You're becoming shrewd" and had Darkstripe make the announcement.

Ans: Fireheart reported Cloudpaw's return to Bluestar (Ravenpaw had helped and even saved them from the dogs), and Bluestar, regretting that she had not listened to Ravenpaw's warning about Tigerclaw long ago, allowed Cloudpaw to stay and had the once-opposing Darkstripe announce it; that night, after dreaming of Spottedleaf, Fireheart woke to a smell of burning and thick smoke—the forest was on fire.

Ans: The riverFireheart kept shouting "Head for the river!" and had Whitestorm and Darkstripe escort the other cats to the river.

Ans: Halftail, Patchpelt, and BramblekitCloudpaw asked about Halftail and Patchpelt, and Goldenflower cried that Bramblekit had been left behind, so Fireheart said "three of the Clan were missing."

Ans: The forest caught fire, and Fireheart directed the Clan to flee to the river while personally helping Willowpelt pull three kits to safety; when the count at the top of the gully found Halftail, Patchpelt, and Bramblekit trapped, he rushed back into the fire with Yellowfang, dragged out the two elders, then leaped onto a burning tree to save Bramblekit, and as he landed the tree collapsed, cutting him off from Yellowfang behind a wall of fire.

Ans: He carried Patchpelt, and Bramblekit followedPatchpelt was unconscious and could not run, so Fireheart "clamping his tired jaws onto Patchpelt's scruff" dragged him along, while Bramblekit "stumbled after them" following on his own little paws.

Ans: SunningrocksThe text says "They caught up with the rest of ThunderClan at Sunningrocks." Fireheart gently laid Patchpelt on a rock, and Goldenflower was reunited with Bramblekit.
